Neer ClassificationNeer-Classification

  • The proximal end of the humerus consists of four parts “shaft, head, greater tuberosity, lesser tuberosity”.
  • Commonly this fracture Occurs in elderly osteoporotic women and 80% are minimally displaced & is treated by conservative means & functional exercises.
  • The fragments of the fracture Are considered displaced if separated by 1cm or angulated 45°.
  • The classification refers to the number of displaced segments and not to the number of fragments or fracture lines.



  • Radiographic Studies 

To classify according to Neer Classification,  three x ray views are required:

Anteroposterior view – in plane of scapula

Anteroposterior view - in plane of scapula

Lateral view – in plane of scapula

lateral view - in plane of scapula

Velpeau modified axillary view


or CT scan can take place
